THE ISLAND OF FORBIDDEN TOYS: THE GILBERT U-238 ATOMIC ENERGY LAB

Growing up, there is always the slim chance that the toy you idolized could theoretically pose more harm to you than the biggest bully or foolish accident. We here at PopBoom are proud to showcase these adorably designed death machines.

Today, we are revisiting THE GILBERT U-238 ATOMIC ENERGY LAB. Initially designed to be a children’s lab kit in which kids could watch chemical reactions with radioactive material, this toy came complete with a Geiger counter, three C batteries, and FOUR URANIUM ORE BEARING SAMPLES. While the samples were low in terms of radioactivity to be around, accidentally ingesting one could have led to a one way trip to hospital for a cancer diagnosis.

Next time someone wants to get you an educational gift, just remind them it may be safer to get that samurai sword you have had your eye on.
